North Yorkshire Child Exploitation Schools Programme

Improve how you safeguard children in your school from criminal and sexual exploitation with a holistic training programme which provides bespoke information and learning for school staff, parents and their children.
All schools across North Yorkshire can access this programme free of charge, thank you to funding from York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority.
Who is the course for?
The programme will include 4 different training sessions for staff, parents and children.
For Primary Schools
The learning programme will include:
- Two 90 minute training sessions for all school staff to learn about child criminal and sexual exploitation which can be delivered in person or live over Teams.
- An in-school session or remote session for children in Years 5 and 6, where they will guide a character through a computer game to learn about grooming.
- A 90 minute awareness session for parents and carers of children in Years 5 and 6, which can be delivered in person or live over Teams.
- Access for parents and carers of children who are at risk of exploitation to a 4 weekly sessions where they will gain an understanding about the methods exploiters are currently using, how to spot the signs, how to protect their child online and how to seek help if they have concerns.
For Secondary Schools
The learning programme will include:
- Two 90 minute training sessions for all school staff to learn about child criminal and sexual exploitation which can be delivered in person or live over Teams.
- An in-school session or remote session for children in Years 7 to 10, where they will watch recorded testimony of young people who have lived experience of child exploitation.
- Access for parents and carers of children who are at risk of exploitation to a 4 sessions delivered each week where they will gain an understanding about the methods exploiters are currently using, how to spot the signs and how to seek help if they have concerns.
- A 90 minute awareness session for parents and carers of children in Years 7 to 10, which can be delivered in person or live over Teams.
School and Teaching staff training sessions
We will be welcoming all teaching and school staff to attend two 90 minute sessions where they will learn:
- What county lines, criminal exploitation and child sexual exploitation is
- How children are being groomed in the North Yorkshire
- Where to signpost parents and carers for support
- The importance of contextual safeguarding and a multi-agency approach
Parents and Carers awareness sessions
Parents and carers of children will be invited to attend an in-person, or free live evening webinar where they will learn about what child exploitation is, what tactics exploiters are using to groom children, what to do if they have concerns and what services are available to them. They will also have the opportunity to ask questions to our subject matter experts.
Parents of children who are at risk of exploitation can also access 4 early intervention sessions which will be delivered each week. Here they can access a more in-depth understanding about how children can be coerced and exploited, what impact the trauma of exploitation can a child’s behaviour and mental health, and how to seek support if they have concerns.
Children and young people learning sessions
Secondary Schools
Schools can choose between an in-person or remote delivery for Children in Years 7-10 where they will watch recorded footage of an exploited young person’s lived experience, followed by the opportunity to ask questions.
Primary Schools
Schools can choose between an in-person, or remote session for children in Year 5 and 6, where they will learn about grooming by following a character through a series of different scenarios in the style of a video game.
