This course is beneficial for anyone who works in safeguarding. The course provides learners with an opportunity to develop their understanding of harmful sexual behaviours and consider the factors which may cause a young person to exhibit harmful sexual behaviours. The learner will develop their knowledge of indicators of harmful sexual behaviours and how to respond effectively. The course enables learners to reflect on their own professional experiences of harmful sexual behaviours and discuss the problems and challenges that may arise when working with young people and colleagues around harmful sexual behaviours. Best practice approaches are explored and learners will be provided with tools to use in their everyday practice.
Learning objectives
Define harmful sexual behaviour and distinguish it from developmentally appropriate sexual behaviour.
Recognise indicators and patterns of harmful sexual behaviours in children and young people.
Understand the underlying causes and risk factors for harmful sexual behaviours, including trauma and abuse history.
Respond appropriately and sensitively to disclosures and incidents of harmful sexual behaviours.
Implement strategies to manage behaviour safely while supporting the childs development and recovery.
Collaborate effectively with professionals (social workers, therapists, etc.) as part of a safeguarding team.
Reflect on your own values, beliefs, and emotional responses to harmful sexual behaviours, and know where to seek support.
